Is a Hardwood Staircase Right For You?

Jason Brown Wood Floors Hardwood Staircase

There are several benefits that a hardwood staircase has over a carpeted staircase, but is it the right choice for you?

Deciding whether a carpeted or hardwood staircase is better isn’t always an easy decision. These are both good options but for different reasons. Determining the pros and cons is the first step in making an informed decision. A hardwood staircase does have some benefits over carpeting that should be considered when you weigh your options and determine the right choice for you.

Cost

Hardwood provides the base for the staircase regardless of whether it’s carpeted or not, which means choosing to carpet your stairs can actually cost you more in the long run since it’s an added expense. This isn’t the case 100% of the time, of course—choosing a high-end hardwood for the ultimate luxury hardwood staircase has the potential to cost more than carpet. In general, it’s easier to save money by choosing a hardwood staircase.

Health

The thing about carpet is that it is a prison for dust, dirt, and debris. Over time, carpet traps bacteria and allergens that can be problematic for those in the home. All of this buildup can cause health issues, especially in children.

In order to prevent this, carpeted stairs require regular maintenance.

Maintenance

Thankfully, a hardwood staircase needs much less maintenance than carpeted stairs. Since it doesn’t trap dust and other gunk like carpet does, you can use a simple wood cleaner and a microfiber cloth to quickly wipe up any dust, dirt, and debris that has started to accumulate.

With carpeted stairs, you’ll be stuck lugging a heavy vacuum up and down them in order to get them clean, which is a major pain.

Looks

Hardwood is classic and timeless—it never really goes out of style. While carpeting goes through various phases of popularity, a good-looking hardwood staircase will be a selling point in your home without a doubt. The neutral shades that hardwood provides are always a good option, and they lend themselves to almost any interior design. Your hardwood staircase will never look ragged and out of date if you choose hardwood.
