Should You Have a Router if You’re a Woodworker?

Jason Brown Wood Floors Router

For woodworkers, a router is often an invaluable tool that offers a lot of options for perfect finishes and flourishes.

There are a lot of different power tools available for woodworkers, many of which have significant uses that can’t be ignored—one of those power tools is a router. Investing in a router such as the Festool Router OF 1010 and taking the time to learn how to use it effectively will pay in a multitude of ways by helping you produce smoother, more finished edges along with perfect decorative elements that really help your pieces stand out from the crowd.

What Does a Router Do?

A router has a wide variety of important uses in woodworking, but some of its primary functions are to provide smooth edges and perfectly aligned decorative elements. For instance, a store-bought dining table had its edge smoothed with a router. If it has decorative effects or lipped edges, those are also the work of a router. Part of what gives a router its utility is the various router bits that are available, similar to how a power drill works.

Getting Started

When first learning to use a router, it can be pretty intimidating. That said, there are plenty of things beginners can do to acclimate to their router and gain skill and experience as they continue to use it. One of the easiest and most essential things a router does is create smooth edges, which is a simple beginner feat to master. It can also be used to cut dadoes and rabbets, make perfect molding, and create recesses for door hinges.

As you gain more experience and get a little more comfortable with your router, you can move up to recreating patterns with it to add a decorative addition to any of your woodworking projects.

Advanced Uses

Routers are excellent for cutting intricate patterns and templates perfectly every time, making them a great addition to any woodworker’s arsenal. This is the best and easiest way to create one-of-a-kind, beautiful works of art with your own signature style. The more experience you have with woodworking and the more experience you have on the router will show better and better results as you continue to develop your skills.
