5 Essential Router Bits for Woodworkers

Jason Brown Wood Floors Router Bits

There are a few useful router bits every woodworker should have on-hand to make each project easier.

A router is an excellent tool that every woodworker should have. Like many power tools, routers come with varying bits that change up their functionality, making them useful for many different projects and creating efficient ways for woodworkers to complete each step of their process.

Straight Cutting Bit

A straight cutting router bit is your basic, general-use bit that will come in handy in many situations while woodworking. It is incredibly useful for template cutting, grooves, and dadoes, among other things. Every woodworker should have this bit in multiple sizes, from 1/8” up to 1/2”, to ensure they have the right size for nearly any project.

Rabbeting Bit

Table saws are commonly used for rabbeting, but having a good set of rabbeting router bits can make this task more efficient, safer, and easier. In some cases, using the table saw is the right call. However, there are times when using a table saw for rabbeting is inefficient and even unsafe, making it a good idea to keep rabbeting router bits on hand.

Up-Cut Spiral Bit

Up-cut spiral routing bits work similarly to straight cutting bits, but they are more useful for plunge-routing. Their superior chip extraction, as compared to straight cutting bits, make them handy for cutting grooves and mortises.

Flush Trim Bit

A flush trim router bit has a guide bearing at its end, allowing it to sit flush with whatever the bearing is up against—this makes it a great bit for guide, template, and working around joins. This bit doesn’t have the broad use of some others,  but it specializes in important areas of woodwork that can take a project from good to great.

Round Over Bit

A round over routing bit softens and rounds the edges of the wood. This bit is very useful for softening the edges of your working wood to avoid hand injuries, as well as softening and rounding projects that will be handled or touched often. These kinds of projects can include but are not limited to, toys, tables, desks, and beds.
