Preparing Your Hardwood Floors for the Summer

Hardwood floors enhance the appeal of any room all year round

With warm weather fast approaching, it is important to be aware of changes with your hardwood floors. Here are a few tips to help you prepare and ensure your floors look great all year round.

Properly Clean Your Hardwood Floors

We are all looking forward to getting together this upcoming summer, whether it be birthday celebrations or family barbecues. With increased traffic in the house, it is essential to clean your hardwood floors the right way. Vacuuming is preferable to sweeping because it pulls dirt from between the floorboards. For lasting results, it is best to vacuum your floors weekly. It is also important to choose cleaning products that are specifically made for hardwood floors. Water can be damaging to hardwood floors, so it is crucial to quickly clean any water that people or pets may have tracked inside the home. Certain soaps and waxes can damage your hardwood floors over time. It’s recommended to use residue-free cleaning products to keep your floors looking new.

Regulate Indoor Humidity Levels

Hardwood floors absorb and repel moisture based on the ambient humidity level. When humidity rises, wood absorbs moisture and expands, and when the humidity drops, the wood expels moisture and shrinks. Summer brings high humidity, especially here in Maryland, and high humidity can also cause damage. The humidity inside your home should not be higher than 50% or 70°F. You may want to consider purchasing a dehumidifier for the summer season. Dehumidifiers take moisture out of the air and can help regulate humidity levels in your home; this will save your hardwood floors in the long run.

Protect Your Floors from Sunlight

The sun gives off highly dangerous ultraviolet (UV) rays that can harm everything from our skin to the floors in your home. Prolonged sun exposure can cause fading of your floors. South-facing windows get a lot of direct sunlight and are the brightest during the day. To reduce the impact of UV rays on your hardwood floors, consider keeping your curtains closed during peak hours of the day when the Sun’s rays are the strongest.
