How to Protect Your Hardwood Floors During a Move

How to Protect Your Hardwood Floors During a Move jason brown wood floors

Your hardwood floors can be easily scratched or damaged when moving heavy furniture around.

Moving into a new house is an exciting, although challenging, experience. Many factors go into having a successful move. When moving, you want to make sure that all of your furniture and belongings are safe from any potential damage. However, many homeowners neglect to give their hardwood floors the same attention. Your hardwood floors can be easily scratched or damaged when moving heavy furniture around. Here are some tips to protect your hardwood floors when moving.

Clean Your Floors

Before moving anything in or out of your home, it is a good idea to clean your hardwood floors first. This may seem unnecessary, but it can save you a lot of time and grief in the long run. Dust or even small rocks can cause significant damage to your floors if they are caught between heavy furniture and the floor. Make sure you sweep your floors to remove any dust or dirt.

Cover Your Floors

Another way to protect your floors when moving furniture is to cover to prevent scratches, scrapes, and dents. There are many different types of products that can be used for this purpose. You can find shock-resistant protective mats that can be cut to any size you need. There are also plastic runners which roll out flat and stick to your floor with a non-adhesive and slip-resistant backing.

Don’t Drag Furniture

Never drag heavy furniture across the floor. No matter what type of hardwood floor you have, this can damage the surface of the finish and cause dents in the wood. It is best to lift and carry furniture across the room if you are able to. For larger pieces of furniture, use furniture sliders and slide them across the floor very carefully. In general, it is a good idea to attach protective felt to the bottom of your furniture as well.

Get a Doormat

When moving furniture into a new room, the first thing you should put down is a doormat for people to wipe their feet on. It is very important to protect your hardwood floors from any dirt, mud, or moisture. Having a spot for people to clean their shoes on reduces the amount of dirt and debris left on your hardwood floors.
