Using Wood Flooring to Enlarge a Small Space

Using Wood Flooring to Enlarge a Small Space

The right flooring, installed in the right position can make your space feel much larger than it actually is.

When choosing wood flooring for your small space, you have several factors to consider. The right flooring, installed in the right position can make your space feel much larger than it actually is. If you’re interested in how wood flooring can make your space feel larger, consider these factors!

Size Matters

Believe it or not, even the width of the planks makes a difference. Moreover, wider planks actually do this even better than their thinner counterparts. It’s actually because, with wider planks, there are fewer seems. With thin planks, there are more planks and therefore more seems. This creates a busy, cramped effect.

The Right Direction

When using wood flooring to visually enlarge a small space, the direction of the planks makes a difference. To elongate a cramped space, look at the walls. Whichever wall is longest, the flooring planks should be laid parallel to it. Another method to try is to install the planks diagonally. This adds visual interest because it is unique, and the diagonal direction draws the eyes from one corner of the room to the other which can make it seem much larger than it actually is.

Coloring

Many people believe that darker shades will make a small space feel smaller. While this is true if there are too many dark colors, pairing dark wood flooring, such as walnut or acacia, with light colored walls and trim can actually make the space feel much larger. Using cool colors on the walls will open up the space further. Warmer tones tend to make the walls feel closer.

Keep it Maintained

It is extremely easy to maintain your wood flooring and when you’re using it to visually enlarge a small space, it is also quite important. If the floor’s surface is clean and reflective, it will help to boost the effect. This is a large part of why so many interior decorators use mirrors to make a space seem larger. The reflective surface is what does the trick!
