Tips for Preventing Noisy Hardwood

Tips for Preventing Noisy Hardwood

Quiet down noisy flooring!

Hardwood flooring is not a small investment, but it is an extremely worthwhile one. When properly installed, your hardwood will last for years to come. Sometimes, however, this type of flooring can be a tad noisy. Fortunately, noisy hardwood is pretty easy to prevent and treat!

Before Installation

One of the best preventative measures you can take to avoid noisy hardwood is to have an underlayment installed. This is a barrier that goes between the subfloor and the flooring planks. An underlayment can also protect your flooring to help it last longer. The thicker the underlayment is, the better it should be at masking the sound. Underlayment is typically made of vinyl, rubber, or super-strong foam. Any one of these materials is a fantastic sound-absorbing layer.

After Installation

If you’re purchasing a home with noisy hardwood, there are some small things you can do to reduce the amount of noise coming from the floors. Some types of furniture can help absorb noise. Upholstered furniture, like sofas, sectionals, and armchairs are surprisingly good at preventing noise.

When you’re trying to decorate your home to reduce sounds, fabrics, upholstery, and throw rugs are your best friends. Window treatments and fabric wall hangings on the walls will help to absorb the sound. Thicker materials tend to work the best.

You should also check the wood planks themselves to make sure there’s nothing wrong that’s causing your flooring to be noisy. Sometimes there are small gaps between the boards and they start to rub together and make noise. There could also be a gap between the subfloor and the joist. If your home has a basement where you can get a view of the floor above, you can have someone walk across the floor and see if you can tell what the problem is from below.
