How to Protect Your Hardwood from Sun Damage

How to Protect Your Hardwood from Sun Damage

When your floors are exposed to too much sunlight, they can become discolored, fade, and even start to warp over time because of the UV rays and the changes in humidity.

Hardwood flooring is an investment in the future of your home. It’s only natural that you would want to protect it from damage. It’s easy to protect your investment from the effects of dirt, dust, scratches, and scuffs. What a lot of homeowners don’t immediately realize is that they also need to protect hardwood from the sun. When your floors are exposed to too much sunlight, they can become discolored, fade, and even start to warp over time because of the UV rays and the changes in humidity. Here are some tips for protecting your hardwood flooring from the effects of sun damage.

Rearrange Furniture and Throw Rugs

You don’t need a full remodel or anything as drastic as that. Simply rearrange your furniture (on protective pads, of course!) and throw rugs every three to four months.  This will reduce sun damage effects by allowing the different areas of your floor to stay a little more even in color.

Shaded by Design

When you go out in the sun, you put on sunscreen and stay in the shade to prevent sunburn and other sun damage. Keeping your hardwood in the shade can help keep it from being damaged. Curtains and drapes can block the sun from the inside, but shrubs, trees, and other plants near the windows can help to block some of the harmful UV rays.

Refinish whenever Necessary

If you don’t catch fading early, it can become permanent. To help prevent this, you should refinish your hardwood regularly. You don’t want to be forced to replace your flooring earlier than necessary!

Evaluate Your Windows

Most new windows you can purchase will have UV protection included, or have the coating as an option. And again, curtains add a great UV-blocking (and stylish!) layer!
