Do You Need a Jointer for Woodworking?

Jason Brown Wood Floors Jointer

While a jointer might not be necessary for every woodworker, they are an excellent tool for anyone who works with rough wood.

If you’ve ever been to a woodworking shop, you’ve probably seen a jointer. For professionals, this is a necessary tool to prepare lumber for use because it saves a lot of time and effort on every project. Rough lumber is a tempting resource, especially for those who do a lot of woodwork, because it’s cheaper than milled lumber. One of the reasons a jointer can be so beneficial for the serious woodworker is that it allows easier preparation of rough lumber. This keeps wood costs down, and the machine will pay for itself over time. At Jason Brown Wood Floors, we carry jointer machines from quality brands like JET and Powermatic—so stop in any time and check it out!

What Does a Jointer Do?

A jointer is a machine that is used to prepare wood for woodworking by making one face and one edge of the board flat with a perfect 90° angle. While these are mostly used for rough wood, they can also be used for pre-milled boards that have warped, have twists or knots, or are otherwise uneven. When you want a product that is perfect and precise, a jointer is your best bet. The most common size of a jointer is 6”—this means the machine can be fed a wood face that is up to  6” wide. If you plan to regularly use lumber larger than that, you will need to invest in a larger machine, such as a JET 10” jointer.

Is it Necessary?

Whether a jointer is necessary really depends on your own circumstances. For the average hobbyist, this might not be a necessary purchase. For a shop or hobbyists that want to work with rough lumber, a jointer is a solid investment.

What a jointer does can be done with hand tools, such as a planer, but this will take a lot more time and elbow grease than you may want to invest in each project. Particularly if you’re working with rough lumber or if you’re sourcing natural wood that hasn’t been cut at all, having tools that will allow you to cut it and prepare it is essential for saving time and sparing yourself a lot of excess effort.
