Choosing Dog-Friendly Wood for Your Flooring

Choosing Dog-Friendly Wood for Your Flooring

You don’t want to live in constant fear of the dog destroying your gorgeous wood floors!

Your furry friend is an important part of your family. Naturally, you want to make design choices for your home that will help everyone who lives there to be comfortable. You don’t want to live in constant fear of the dog destroying your gorgeous wood floors! So, how do you prevent pet damage to your wood floors? For starters, keeping your dog’s nails trimmed really helps! No matter how vigilant you are with nail trimming and keeping paws clean, some small scratches may still appear. To reduce the appearance of these scratches, avoid high-gloss finishes. Some species of wood floors are better suited to dog-friendly homes than others!

Hickory wood floors are great because they have a pretty high Janka hardness score. Its color variations and strong grain patterns make hickory great at hiding imperfections. In the unlikely event that there is some damage, it probably won’t be nearly as noticeable.

If you’d like a hardwood that’s a little more consistently colored and patterned than hickory, consider Maple. Maple is still nice and hard so it will resist damage. Maple wood floors come in many different shades, too, so your home can be stylish and dog friendly!

White Oak

White Oak wood floors work well for a variety of homes, including those with pets. There’s a reason it’s one of the most popular flooring species, after all. White oak has a Janka score of 1,360, which puts it in the middle of the scale. It’s strong enough to stand up to dog feet but pliable enough to be comfortable for your feet. White oak also tends to have strong grain patterns as well.
