Buying Power Tools: 3 Questions to Ask

Here at Jason Brown Wood Floors, we do a whole lot more than hardwood floors. Our showroom is open year-round to tradespeople and DIYers interested in purchasing power tools. We’re an authorized retailer of some of the world’s most revered manufacturers—including Festool, Mirka, and Diablo. There’s no substitute for shopping for power tools in a showroom. Next time you stop by to expand your tool kit, here are some questions you might want to ask before making your next purchase.

Next time you stop by our showroom to expand your tool kit, here are some questions you might want to ask.

Is This Right for My Application?

A saw does one basic thing: it cuts. But there are countless different kinds of saws on the market, and many of them have different applications. Table saws are amazing pieces of equipment, but they might be overkill for your average DIYer who would do just fine with a circular saw. This is just the tip of the iceberg for why your application matters whenever you’re looking at a new power tool.

When you come into our showroom, give us a sense of the kind of tool you’re looking for, and for what purpose. We’re here to steer you in the right direction.

Corded or Cordless?

In the world of power tools, few questions are more relevant than whether a piece of equipment is corded or cordless. Your first question to ask when checking out a new power tool should probably be whether it is corded or cordless.

As a rule of thumb, remember this: corded tools are generally more powerful than their cordless counterparts. But that doesn’t mean they’re always superior. As we described above, what you plan to use it for matters. If you’ll be traveling with it or maneuvering in tight spaces, cordless is more often the way to go. Don’t forget to take battery life into account!

What Safety Features Does It Have?

All tradespeople and do-it-yourselfers should weigh safety features heavily when checking out a new power tool. Every day, countless workers across the country injure themselves due to unsafe practices or unsafe tools.

All power tools on the market are required to meet a bare minimum of safety features. But truly superb products go above and beyond to ensure that the individual using them remains free from harm. A good example of this is the SawStop—a table saw that stops its blade the very moment it comes in contact with human skin.

For whatever questions you might have about your next power tool purchase, Jason Brown Wood Floors is here to help. Drop by our showroom and we’ll help you pick out the perfect tool.
