5 Reasons You Need Underlayment for Your Wood Floors

5 Reasons You Need Underlayment for Your Wood Floors

An underlayment can help to extend the life of your hardwood flooring.

When you are installing a new wood floor, you’ll want to be sure you choose the most beautiful wood possible. But as gorgeous as they are, your wood floors will eventually start to wear out. One way to make them last is to add an underlayment.

Provides Stability

Stability important for your wood floors.  A damaged floor isn’t as stable as it should be. Plus, whenever you replace the old wood flooring with newer planks, you might damage the subfloor underneath the wood. Adding an underlayment can prevent damage from lack of stability.

Cushions the Floors

The cushioning effect provided by the underlayment makes the floor easier to walk on. Over time, foot traffic will cause your wood flooring to wear down, luckily, underlayment can slow down that process. While you will need to repair, refinish, or replace your floors at some point, an underlayment can help them last longer before larger maintenance projects are required.

Reduces Noise

When your hardwood floors start to make noise, the noise can quickly grate on your nerves. With an underlayment in place, you can make those noises stop. It’s especially important to add one when your children and pets running around the house, which can make the noises louder.

Controls Moisture Damage

Moisture can be a problem year-round. Fall and winter are a bit drier than spring and summer, but you should still expect rain and mud to come into your home throughout the year. Plus, there’s always the possibility someone might spill water or some other liquid on the floor. Adding an underlayment helps control moisture damage, especially from humidity.

Helps Insulate the Floor

When it’s cold out, all you want to do is keep your feet warm. Socks and slippers are great solutions, but what if you prefer to walk around at home while barefoot? An underlayment helps keep your wood floors warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer by providing an extra layer of insulation between the hardwood surface and the subfloor.
