4 Essential Router Bits for Woodworking

4 Essential Router Bits for Woodworking jason brown wood floors

It can be difficult to choose the right router bit for your specific project.

Have you recently purchased a new router and are unsure of how to start your next project? Are you overwhelmed with the number of router bits available at the hardware store? There are various types of router bits available, and they all serve different purposes. It can be difficult to choose the right router bit for your specific project. When choosing a router bit, consider several factors to get the best performance for your money. Here are a few essential router bits for woodworking.

Roundover Bit

The roundover bit is a very simple and effective bit to soften the edges. It is a great woodworking router bit for all kinds of projects. If your goal is to create rounded sharp cuts on a square edge, the roundover bit is the best choice for you. Also, you can use this bit to make 90 degrees arcs.

Straight Cutting Bit

This is an excellent multi-purpose bit for things like grooves, box joints, template cutting, and more. Additionally, these types of bits come in various lengths, sizes, and diameters to help you create different shapes and sizes by cutting through or hollowing out a spot on the wood.

Rabbeting Bit

Usually, rabbets are cut using a table saw. But, rabbeting bits produce clean surfaces on both faces. Another benefit of using your router to do your rabbets is that it leaves you can continue to use your table saw to make your rip cuts and cross cuts.  Rabbeting bits also come fully equipped with various bearing tips of different diameters to create different sizes of rabbits.

Up-Cut Spiral Bit

An up-cut spiral bit works much faster than a straight cutting bit. It is much better for plunge-routing, and it has better chip extraction. The bottoms of both bits are designed to cut cleanly, while the spiral flutes lift the chips and disperse them through the top of the mortise.
