When’s the Best Time to Add Wood Floors During a Remodeling Project?

Remodeling Project

A remodeling project is a good excuse to install some brand new wood floors – but exactly when is the best time?

Every remodeling project involves a certain element of mess during the process. Dust and debris are simply a fact of life during a remodeling project, whether in the kitchen, the living room, or the bathroom. Many homeowners decide that a home remodeling project is a perfect time to add some new wood floors, and we can’t say we disagree! But it may be difficult to decide the order of the project. Should you get your new floors installed first, or wait until the end of the project to get them done, or sometime in the middle? Today we have a few tips to help you tackle your home remodeling project timeline right.

First Steps

The first step of any given project is generally the easiest to figure out. Usually, if there’s an exceedingly messy part of the project that has to be done, that part is done first. So if you’ll be tearing down a wall, removing kitchen cabinetry, or demolishing anything else, you should plan on taking care of those tasks first.

Install Your New Wood Floors Last

When undertaking a complete remodeling project, it is almost always wise to tear out your old wood floors or carpeting first, install new cabinets/countertops, and save the new hardwood flooring installation for last. There are a couple of good reasons for this:

  • Installing new wood floors at the end of a remodeling project helps protect it from any damage that may result from dust and debris or from carpenters and other renovation experts.
  • When new wood floors are installed, you typically need to wait at least 30 days before laying anything on top of it, such as a protective painter’s tarp. The reasoning behind this is that you could potentially “suffocate” the finish of the floor, which is very difficult to repair and can compromise the beauty of the wood.
